The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is in the forefront of developing awareness campaigns reflective of the driving theory test UK to promote safe driving, in support of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) findings based on the global status report on road safety for 2015.
The United Kingdom has greatly benefitted from the research findings of the WHO in the past and allowed the government to take a serious stance on promoting and educating the driving public regarding safety issues that affect millions of people.
The DVSA, in support of these awareness programs, patterned the latest driving theory test to maintain the standards in preparation of not just issuing licenses to new drivers, but also to ensure that proper safety education is included as a requisite.
One of the major focus of the DVSA is to provide an extensive awareness program to new drivers specific to their preferred vehicle type.Under the driving theory test, the candidate can only secure a license based on the preferred vehicle type he or she chooses.
There are four basic types that are covered in a practice test to help provide a review on the education aspect of the assessments ;
Passenger bus or coach
Large vehicle or lorry
Each type contains 50 carefully selected questions for the practice test that focus on driving safety, traffic signs and symbols and scenario-based analysis, among others.
The actual theory test, however, provides additional test questions for the heavy vehicle types like the lorry, coach and bus which have 100 test questions each.
The driving theory test provides multiple choices for scenarios that would test the understanding of new drivers.
This allows the DVSA to assess and evaluate the current education and awareness programs so that it could provide more laser focus on learning gaps that need to be modified or corrected.
This interactive evaluation program has seen better times as the WHO indicated that road fatality accidents have been declining year after year, in fact, from 2004 to 2013, there has been a consistent drop with an average of 35% -45% during that time frame.
By 2020, the fatality reduction target is projected to be between 37 to 60%. Among the major contributors identified for this success rate is the government’s campaign on safer roads and mobility with a widespread focus and reinforcement of formal audits for new road construction projects, regular inspections of existing roads, policies to promote walking an cycling and policies to boost strengthen investment in public transport and sub national policies related to traffic and motoring safety.
Make no mistake, the driving theory test for UK has taken greater strides in making sure that the roads are safe for both the motorists and pedestrians.
